Photos: Camellia Gardens in Winter
A busy bee harvesting.
Oak forest in the middle of Descanso Gardens.
Seeing as how it was winter.
Photographer’s Notes:
Cameras Used:
- Nikon D700
- Nikon D7000
Lens Used:
- Nikon 50mm f/1.4
- Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8
- Nikon Telephoto AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8
My goal this time was to go Descanso Gardens and photograph a bee in a flower. Â So why not try the new Nikon D7000 out. Strapped to that body was the 105mm macro lens, meaning on an DX body (APS-C sized sensor) I was able to get ~157.5mm telephoto zoom out of my pics.
The 50mm f/1.4 came in handy for general walking and shallow depth of field shots.
After a little more walking, I got to the middle of the gardens where oak forest stood. I just had to use the 14-24mm lens to capture the massiveness of the trees. That HDR shot was from 7 bracketed shots.
Descanso Gardens is a natural “bowl” in the San Rafael hills that provides a secluded setting for an urban retreat of year-round natural beauty, internationally renowned botanical collections and spectacular seasonal horticultural displays. Very few people know about Descanso Gardens and how such a beautiful place exist on the outskirts of LA. If you haven’t been there, you should go!
